Lee Brice, ‘A Woman Like You’ – Song Review

Lee Brice mellows out on his new single, 'A Woman Like You.' While his songs have often offered heartwarming stories, previous singles like 'Love Like Crazy' have also been a vehicle for the singer to showcase his big voice. Like many a Martina McBride song, it's almost expected to hear him lean back and show off some.

That never happens on 'A Woman Like You' (the first single from his upcoming sophomore album), a song that somehow George Strait missed. The simple and reserved attitude Brice approaches the song with is a good reflection of the love story he describes. A woman asks her husband what he'd do without her, and he answers.

"I'd do a lot more offshore fishin' / I'd probably eat more drive-thru chicken / Take a few strokes off my golf game / If I'd have never known your name / I'd still be driving that old green 'Nova / I probably never would have heard of yoga / Be a better football fan / But if I was a single man / Alone and out there on the loose / I'd be looking for a woman like you."

This may not be a conversation every couple has had, but it's one every couple believes they could have. She rolls her eyes at his cheesy jokes and romantic overtures. He gets serious, adding, "I could tell that got her attention / So I said, 'Oh yeah I forgot to mention' / I wouldn't trade a single day / For 400 years the other way."

Romance isn't always about diamonds and roses. Sometimes it's as simple as honesty and sincerity, and Brice has those two words figured out in this everyman's love song. "She knows what a mess I'd be if I didn't have her here / But to be sure / I whispered in her ear / You know I get sick deep-sea fishin' / And you make the best fried chicken / I got a hopeless golf game / I love the sound of your name," he sings during the final chorus.

A second record should show growth and, while this song will cause some to take a second look at their radios to make sure it's not Strait or even Billy Currington singing, 'A Woman Like You' is a song a more mature artist sings. His debut album, 'Love Like Crazy,' was released in 2010, but he began working on it as far back as 2006. It's good to hear he's become that more patient singer.
