Little Big Town Hit a Nerve With Powerful ‘The Daughters’ at 2019 ACM Awards
Dressed all in white, Little Big Town took the stage at the 54th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday night (April 7) ready to not only sing their new single "The Daughters," but to make a statement via their collective voices.
They did just that during an emotional performance that had DIerks Bentley raising his hands up in the air and wiping tears from his eyes. Even LBT's Karen Fairchild looked as if she was pushing back the emotions during some of the more powerful moments of the intense song, which details the special challenges girls and women deal with in terms of societal expectations.
"Oh girl wash your face before you come to the table / Girl know your place, be willing and able / Take it on the chin / Let the best man win / Girl shoulders back and stand up straight / Girl watch your mouth and watch your weight / Mind your manners / Smile for the camera," Fairchild sang before delivering the song's penultimate lines: "I've heard of God the Son and God the Father / I'm just looking for a God for the daughters."
Making the performance even that more beautiful was the slew of contemporary dancers that surrounded the band while they sang, with two little girls joining hands in front of the band at the conclusion of the song. The dancers were similar to the ones that were included in the new Dancers Cut video of "The Daughters," which was directed by Dano Cerny and filmed in an empty gymnasium built in 1948 in Portland, Tenn.
The song, which was written by Fairchild, Sean McConnell and Ashley Ray, is the first new track fans have heard from the country foursome's forthcoming ninth studio album, which they are producing.
