Maddie and Tae stopped by Today on Tuesday (Sept. 1) to bring their sassy girl power and hit debut single "Girl in a Country Song" to the plaza.

The young women looked right at home performing for such a large crowd and an even larger broadcast. They played the single that put them on the map and has skyrocketed their young career.

After the performance the duo sat down with the Today Show crew to talk about their crazy past year, the new album, Start Here, and what it's like to be a face of female empowerment.

"We wrote a song that was so bold and said something no one wanted to say," Tae Dye explains. "So we're glad we get to be the torch for women empowerment."

The pair also chatted about the new record and discussed how it the songs on the project are comparable to journal entries. Maddie Marlow described how the album goes in subsequent order and represents their journey thus far.

"It starts with a song called 'Waiting on a Plane' and taking that leap of faith and following your dreams," Marlow shares, "And it ends with a song called 'Downside of Growing Up.' It's about how you can't grow in comfort ... It truly is a beautiful thing when you get pushed out of your comfort zone."

Maddie & Tae's debut album, Start Here, was made available last week. This fall they will be embarking on their first headlining tour of the same name to support the project.
