Over the last few years, the price of fast-food in America has taken a weird turn. Most fast-food places now aren't the value that they used to be — meal deals are getting smaller and the prices are getting larger.

One Reddit user shared a Finance Buzz report illustrating just how much prices have increased at McDonalds, and customers were unsurprisingly very unhappy and had a lot to say about the stats.

Why is Fast Food So Expensive Now?

Some fast-food chains in America have undertaken some pretty dramatic price hikes over the past few years. Inflation, worker wages are some of the factors that have been contributing to the increase in prices.

In the past 10 years, prices for items have essentially doubled at McDonalds locations in America. To get a better understanding of just what has happened to the prices, let's take a look under the hood.

According to the US Sun, the item with the greatest percent increase over the last 10 years was the McChicken Sandwich, which rose 199% from $1 to $2.99. Gone are the days of getting 3 McChicken sandwiches and handing the cashier 4 one dollar bills and saying "keep the change."

The Quarter Pounder with Cheese Meal at McDonald's had the greatest price increase since 2014.

The meal has increased by $6.60, from $5.39 to $11.99 — a 122% hike. For a family of four, that makes what was once an under $30 meal about $50.

Another big price increase is for the 10-piece McNugget Meal, which costs $5 more than it did in 2014.

The meal's price spiked from $5.99 to $10.99, or 83%.That's more than a dollar per nugget, and we all know McDonald's nuggets are good, but not that good.

"It stopped me from going there. It's good though, I've learned that sometimes I'm better off not eating," said one Reddit user.

Another customer shared that they've been spending their dollars at grocery stores instead because they can no longer afford fast food.

"You can get four to five pounds of chicken breasts for under $13 at Walmart, which is about what a Big Mac meal costs," said one person.

One Reddit user summed it up, saying that the chain used to be for "poor people" but is now for "lazy affluent" people who don't pay much attention to menu prices.
