David Wilson's death -- a suicide -- comes after what friends describe as a jubilant time in his and girlfriend Mindy McCready's life. Apparently, the singer had just won a lengthy custody battle over her oldest son, Zander, before Christmas.

"They had a lot to celebrate," publicist Kat Atwood said, according to E! News.

Wilson died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Jan. 13. Police arrived at his house in Heber Springs, Ark. at around 6:15PM. He was pronounced dead after 8PM, and while an investigation is ongoing, no charges have been filed in the case.

"Although David was not Zander's birth father," Atwood said, "David was his father in every measure of the word." The 6-year-old was born to McCready and Billy McKnight. McKnight and McCready's mother, Gayle Inge, were battling the 'Ten Thousand Angels' for custody of Zander. In April 2012, she and David Wilson became parents to Zayne. He was nine months old at the time of his father's untimely death.

There is some speculation that the tragedy could cause a judge to look once again at the custody arrangement, although no indication of that process beginning has been reported. McCready has not commented on the incident aside from a statement that came immediately following the shooting:

""David was my soulmate; he was a caregiver and guiding hand to our sons, Zander and Zayne. He was a precious gift from God to all of us and, yesterday, he returned home and is now with his mother and father."
