Sam Hunt Becoming a ‘Singles Man,’ Won’t Be Stingy With New Music
Sam Hunt is one of modern day country music's most revolutionary artists. While in large part a credit to his ability to write an ear worm of a song, Hunt's success also stems from his ever-changing strategy.
In an interview with Billboard, Hunt reveals a plan to release new music as singles not long after the songs wrap in the studio. This means fans can expect to hear new material from Hunt before an official album release.
"I try to make music that's relevant to my life and relatable to the culture I live in," the country music superstar says. "Putting out music as it's made, versus holding it until an album's finished, allows me to be more timely and maintain balance."
His current single, "Body Like a Back Road," is an example of this strategy. The song was written and released as a radio single after he announced his engagement to now-wife Hannah Lee Fowler in January 2017. The song is currently in the top spot on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart.
"I think the approach of compiling the album as you go and providing a musical surprise every few months is fantastic. It’s not a brand new model — there are a lot of pop and hip-hop artists who have been following that formula for some time; that’s part of the day-to-day at Spotify — but I think it’s time for country music to contemplate the use of that," says John Marks, the head of Spotify's country music programming. "Some developing country artists already do, but Sam is the one to lead the charge as a major artist."
Hunt will continue to work on his new album throughout the spring and summer, now that he's gotten his wedding out of the way. He'll appear as a headliner at the 2017 Taste of Country Music Festival in June.
