Sugarland have returned with their first new single in five years, and they promise fans that they are "Still the Same."

For the most part, that promise rings true in the new music, which features the same blend of sharp songwriting and modern production that characterized most of the duo's output during their chart run. A soft acoustic guitar run underpins the verse of "Still the Same," accompanied by some electronic hand claps that stamp the production with a contemporary sheen. The juxtaposition of Kristian Bush's musicality and Jennifer Nettles' voice has always been Sugarland's trademark, and that certainly hasn't changed as they reunite and move forward.

“We are thrilled for fans to hear our new music, especially this new single,” Nettles says in a press release. “The title of the song is so meaningful to us as we want fans to know, we are still the same, we are still the same Sugarland they’ve known and loved."

The lyrics of "Still the Same" manage to walk a fine line, serving as an anthem to reintroduce Sugarland to their longtime fans, but also remaining nebulous enough to be taken literally as a love song.

"And here we are / We've come so far / Let's leave it better than how it came / Don't be afraid to change / Our love is still the same, still the same, still the same," Nettles sings in a chorus that builds to a faster tempo to keep the listener engaged.

"Still the Same" is the first single from an album that Sugarland will release in 2018. No further details have been revealed, but the duo have confirmed that they will tour around the new project.

Sugarland, "Still the Same" Lyrics

Where do we start / How 'bout right here where we are / You've been carrying this weight around / Walk in the door and lay it down / Life goes fast / It's been a while, I have to ask / Where have you been, how did that feel, how are we now, 'cause that's what's real

All the space and the time between us / Man, you should have seen us / This ain't no mystery, our future is our history

Chorus:

I feel alive / And can we try to leave it better than how it came / Don't be afraid to change / Our love is still the same, still the same, still the same / And here we are / We've come so far / Let's leave it better than how it came / Don't be afraid to change / Our love is still the same, still the same, still the same

What comes next / We don't know, we're not there yet / But I bet it's gonna shine better than all we left behind / In a room in a blink and now it's like we never went a day without it / Pick it back up where we left off / This is liftoff

Repeat Chorus

Ooh ooh, watch it spin and ooh ooh, jump right in and ooh ooh let's begin and we can see don't have to be a big step / Just imagine, take a breath / Let it happen, when I hear you laugh it sets me free, it sets me free

Repeat Chorus
