Ed Sheeran Asks for Tim McGraw, Faith Hill Copyright Lawsuit to Be Dismissed
Ed Sheeran is asking a judge to throw out a lawsuit claiming that he misappropriated "The Rest of Our Life," which Tim McGraw and Faith Hill recorded and released as a country single.
Songwriters Sean Carey and Beau Golden filed a lawsuit in New York federal court on Jan. 10, alleging "The Rest of Our Life" was stolen from a song of theirs that was a hit in Australia in 2016. Their filing alleges that "The Rest of Our Life" is "blatant copying" of their 2014 song, "When I Found You," which Jasmine Rae released via ABC Records.
"The copying is, in many instances, verbatim, note-for-note copying of original elements of the Song, and is obvious to the ordinary observer," their complaint states.

Songwriters Ed Sheeran, Amy Wadge, Johnny McDaid and Steve Mac were also named as defendants in the legal filing, along with several music companies and publishers. According to TMZ, Sheeran pushed back against the allegations in legal papers he filed Monday (April 2), saying that he never sought permission from the songwriters because "The Rest of Our Life" is an "originally and independently created musical composition" that has no link to their prior song.
"The Rest of Our Life" is the title song of McGraw and Hill's first-ever duets album. They released it to country radio as the album's second single in October of 2017.
