Walker Hayes Recounts Terrifying Delivery, Heartbreaking Death of Baby Girl After Wife’s Uterine Rupture
It's been nearly three months since Walker Hayes and wife Laney's seventh child died during a traumatic delivery. Now, he's ready to talk about it.
Sitting down with People magazine, the couple recount the tragedy in which they lost a baby girl, Oakleigh Klover.
As the parents of six kids, the married couple had been experiencing a rather uneventful pregnancy with their seventh child until June 6. As labor began at the couple's Nashville-area home, Laney experienced a rupture of her uterus that had her hemorrhaging internally. A C-section began at a nearby hospital, but the child couldn't be saved.
"'What do I do?'" Hayes recalls asking himself. "'When Laney wakes up, how do I tell her? How am I the one to explain, it’s a girl, but you know, she died?' I knew that was just going to crush Laney."
If that wasn’t enough, Hayes was informed by doctors that Laney's life was also hanging in the balance. "I just waited," the singer remembers. "I really just hoped that this wasn’t going to be the worst day of my life, even though it kind of already was."
Thankfully, Laney has physically recovered, but emotionally the couple says that they are still struggling. "I lost my last baby and now I’m done?" says Laney, who has been told by doctors that she will never again be able to carry a child. "That’s hard."
It's a bittersweet feeling, she admits. Laney says her six children are "more than enough to me" — she tries to maintain a balance between her living children and her grief.
"Laney and I have cried a lot," Hayes adds, "but one thing that makes me the happiest is how much how love has been around us."
