During “Beautiful Drug,” Zac Brown Band explore roads no previous ZBB single has ventured down. The very pop-friendly song borrows from EDM. The group mostly tosses aside their stringed instruments in favor or knobs and buttons.

It’s yet another powerful statement from the Zac Brown Band. Their most loyal fans expect their brand of country to be as genre-bending as anything on country radio, but for the most part, their singles have fallen safely inside an outsider’s expectations. Brown’s voice and the story he tells roots “Beautiful Drug” to the format. The arrangement is expansive.

“You're such a beautiful drug / I can't get enough / Addicted and I'm dying for a hit of your love / Got a death wish baby, baby / Don't want you to save me, save me,” he sings at each chorus of this fast-paced, relentless dance hit.

The second verse really stands up from the constant drumming: “She lets her hair down / And all of mine stand up / Can't help but stare now / Gotta feel that touch / Her kiss, my fix, so sweet / Can't quit those lips are a habit to me,” Brown sings. From there the production team employs a bit an ethereal, sci-fi effect to his voice that quickly bleeds back into what you’re used to hearing.

“Sweet intoxication and I'm never getting sober / I can tell that the effects are taking over / Pull me in, get me hooked like a junkie / You got me feeling so high.”

“Beautiful Drug” is the third released from Jekyll + Hyde and the first to really showcase Hyde. In fact, it’s the most left-of-center single Zac Brown Band have ever released, which translates to their biggest risk. One gets a sense that this band is pretty comfortable at the edges of the format. It’s the secret all but the most casual fan was aware of already anyway.

Why Fans Will Love It: Not all will, as ZBB employ more effects than ever. But the song's relentless energy will convert most quickly.
