Charles Kelley debuted his new single “Lonely Girl” at the 2016 ACM Awards with a soulful performance surrounded on all sides by a sea of fans.

The singer stood underneath towering spotlights, washed in shades of red, creating a perfect set for the sultry tune. Kelley worked the stage with a confident swagger, a background vocalist on either side bringing a bit of old school R&B flair to the performance. After the first chorus the artist stepped into the crowd, choosing a few lucky ladies in the audience to serenade with the haunting melody of the verse. Kelley’s talent was clearly evident as he delivered near-flawless vocals on the song, not to mention his always-present charm.

The song is his second single from his solo project The Driver. Cowritten by Chris Stapleton and Jesse Frasure, Kelley says he knew when he heard the song years ago it was something special, but didn't think it was the right fit for Lady Antebellum. Now that he's recorded it, he says it's quickly become a fan favorite.

"It was so obvious when the record came out that the fans were responding to that the most. When we were talking about performing on the show the producers were like ‘We would love for you to do ‘Lonely Girl.’ And we were like ‘Perfect timing,'" he tells Taste of Country.

"Lonely Girl" follows the title track for the record, which features Dierks Bentley and Eric Paslay and was nominated for a Grammy this year.
