Chris Stapleton Draws Standing Ovation for ‘Broken Halos’ at 2017 CMA Awards
Shortly after winning Album of the Year at the 2017 CMA Awards Wednesday (Nov. 8), Chris Stapleton performed his single "Broken Halos" to a standing ovation.
Though "Broken Halos" peaked at No. 30 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart – stats that pale in comparison to his country superstar counterparts – Stapleton has become one of the most revered artists in country music.
His performance was one of the most organic of the night, featuring an acoustic guitar and Stapleton's voice front and center with harmony vocals from his wife Morgane, who is expecting the couple's twins in 2018. A backing band also lightly complemented Stapleton on the minimalist track, mimicking the studio version produced by Stapleton and Dave Cobb.
Besides winning 2017 Album of the Year for From A Room: Volume 1, Stapleton also won Album of the Year at the 2015 CMA Awards for his album Traveller.
The 2015 CMA Awards are what launched Stapleton's artist career after an incredible performance with Justin Timberlake and three award wins, including New Artist of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and Album of the Year. The following week, Stapleton's album Traveller, which was released six months prior to the show, rose to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling more than 50,000 copies that week and rocketing Stapleton to prominence in country music.
