On June 16, 2011, Garth Brooks was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame at their 42nd annual induction ceremony and awards show. The country superstar, who seemed to be on cloud nine as he posed for pictures on the red carpet with his wife Trisha Yearwood, attended the event in New York City, along with many other inductees.

During the ceremony, Brooks performed a duet with rock icon Billy Joel, who also inducted Brooks into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The duo played Brooks' 1991 hit 'Shameless' for the crowd. Brooks later spoke about Joel, saying, "You talk about songwriters, there's one of the greatest songwriters of all time ... And he's taken a day out of his life to do this, I feel very lucky."

The audience was also treated to performances from Dwight Yoakam and Trisha Yearwood. Yoakam also had the privilege of inducting Allen Toussaint into the Hall of Fame.
