‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Is Officially Going Country With Texas Spinoff
Grey’s Anatomy is officially heading to Texas — and honestly, the setup already sounds very different from anything fans have seen before.
ABC has ordered a brand-new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff set in rural West Texas, marking the third expansion of the iconic medical drama universe created by Shonda Rhimes.
And instead of another big-city hospital, this one is swapping Seattle skyscrapers for “miles of nowhere.”
Heading to West Texas
According to Deadline, the new series is being co-created by Rhimes and current Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis, with Ellen Pompeo also attached as an executive producer.

The show is described as an “edgy drama about a team at a rural West Texas medical center, the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.”
So yes — it sounds like Grey’s is officially going country.
A Very Different Kind of Medical Drama
Marinis, who is originally from Texas, said setting the show in the Lone Star State makes the project especially personal.
“I am incredibly excited to expand the Grey’s Anatomy universe,” she said in a statement, adding that the series will bring “new characters and stories to life” while still delivering the “heart, emotion, and connection” fans have loved from Grey’s for more than two decades.

She also called the opportunity to set the series in her home state especially meaningful and thanked Rhimes for allowing her to help expand the franchise.
Could Familiar Faces Show Up?
While ABC has not confirmed whether the series will feature crossover appearances from existing Grey’s Anatomy characters, reports suggest the new show could still connect to the larger universe.
One possibility fans are already discussing is Jake Borelli’s Levi Schmitt, who moved to Texas during Season 21.
Still, the new series is expected to focus primarily on an entirely new group of doctors navigating life and medicine in a remote part of the state.
When Will the New Grey’s Spinoff Premiere?
The untitled series is currently expected to premiere during ABC’s midseason lineup in 2027.

Meanwhile, Grey’s Anatomy itself has already been renewed for Season 23, which is expected to debut this fall.
