Street Musician’s Johnny Cash Cover Goes Viral [Watch]
A video of the late Jesse Morris performing Johnny Cash has resurfaced and has Cash fans awed at the striking resemblance between the two singers' voices. Morris is shown in a four-minute clip busking while singing "Sunday Morning Comin' Down," and the resemblance is eerie.
"I sure as hell ain't Johnny Cash," Morris says at the start of the video, but upon listening to him, people passing by did a double take, as his vocals are strikingly familiar to the country legend.
The clip has already amassed over 4 million views and as it spread, it was learned that Morris passed away in 2011. Watch Morris' take on "Sunday Morning Comin' Down" above.
"Sunday Morning Comin' Down" was written by Kris Kristofferson. It was later recorded by Ray Stevens in 1969 and then Johnny Cash in 1970. Cash's version reached No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart and was named the CMA Song of the Year in 1970.
Cash's life and legacy are honored at the Johnny Cash Museum in Nashville, and earlier this year it was revealed that the museum has expanded to include several new exhibits and interactive features including In the Studio, which allows fans to re-mix Cash’s songs. The studio allows the fans to isolate individual instrumental or vocal parts and get a new insight into the musical tracks.
“Sony/Columbia was actually kind enough to give us the raw tracks, which they’d never done with anybody before,” museum founder Bill Miller says. “I heard a song that I’d known for 30-40 years called ‘One Piece at a Time,’ but I had no idea that Johnny was doing his own harmony on the song. But with this, you can isolate the vocals, and it’s just like, ‘What?! I always thought that was Marshall Grant backing him up.’ But it’s actually Johnny, and you can tell it’s him.”
