Lauren Duski Celebrates Grandparents’ Love in Touching ‘The Weather’ Video [Watch]
Lauren Duski's emotional new video for her new song, "The Weather," draws from family footage to paint a moving portrait of the love her grandfather had for her grandmother.
Duski co-wrote "The Weather (Grandpa's Song)" with Liz Rose, one of the most successful songwriters in Nashville. The song's lyrics draw directly on Duski's experience of losing her grandmother in 2017 and then having the family come together to try to make a normal Christmas. Duski and Rose convey a vivid portrait of decades of life spent together and the depth of pain when that is taken away.
"If he still drank, he'd be drinking / If he still smoked, he'd be lighting one up / If he wasn't shutting down, about right now / He'd be opening up / 'Bout how he finished all her stories / And bought her magazines / The gossip kind from the checkout line she always loved to read / Telling me all about 65 years together / But right now he can only talk about the weather," Duski sings.
"Growing up I witnessed the greatest love story," Duski writes onscreen to begin "The Weather" video. "My grandparents were best friends for 65 years. And when we lost my Grandma over Christmas in 2017, I realized there was something even more heartbreaking than losing her ... watching my Grandpa live in a world without her."
Duski uses home video she shot on her phone for much of the video, interspersing it with old photos from her childhood and even some old home movies of herself and her grandmother on Christmas in 1992. She ends the video on a poignant note by playing a phone message her grandmother left for her, thanking her for a card that she sent.
Duski, wrote, directed, filmed and edited her video for "The Weather." The song appears on her debut EP, Midwestern Girl, which reached No. 26 on Billboard’s Country Albums chart and No. 47 on Billboard’s Independent Chart after she released it in February.
Midwestern Girl is available via iTunes. The EP glowing press coverage from Rolling Stone Country, People, Billboard, Time and more.
Duski fist came to public attention when she competed on Blake Shelton's team during Season 12 of The Voice in 2017, placing second. CMT named her as one of their 2019 Next Women of Country alongside Anna Vaus, Emily Hackett, Ingrid Andress, Lainey Wilson, Leah Turner, Rachel Wammack, Stephanie Quayle and Tenille Townes.
