Southern rock bassist Stuart Swanlund was a mainstay onstage for the Marshall Tucker Band from 1985, and was with the group when they recorded 'Hangin' Out in Smoky Places' -- their only song to chart on country radio charts. Swanlund was remembered as having never-ending enthusiasm and for being a great friend. MTB founding member Doug Gray said in the days after his August 2012 death that "Stubie" was the heart of the band onstage. Last winter, he was able to perform at the Grand Ole Opry for the first time, which was a career highlight for the 54-year-old.
