Tenille Townes Tugs at the Heartstrings With Aching ‘I Kept the Roses’
Tenille Townes demonstrates the scope of her artistry with her striking new song, "I Kept the Roses."
Shared on Friday (April 26), "I Kept the Roses" is a vintage-sounding ballad about holding on to a piece of happiness from a relationship that's come to an end. Townes' distinct voices shines on the Americana-tinged track, as she sings of erasing various aspects of the relationship from her life, including taking their pictures out of the frames and letting go of mutual friends.
But in spite of the sadness, Townes keeps one specific item from the relationship that brings her joy, choosing to see light in the darkness. "But I kept the roses / Right by my bed / And it should make me lonely / But I'm smiling instead / 'Cause you weren't the one babe / But you were the closest / I let the rest of us go / But I kept the roses," she sings achingly, her powerful voice mirroring that of a classic folk singer from the 1960s.
“'I Kept The Roses' is one of my very favourite songs to sing and I love the message of holding on to the good in the hard things we go through. And being able to smile about the way that it shaped you," Townes writes alongside the video on YouTube.
Townes became a rising star in the country scene following an opening stint on Miranda Lambert and Little Big Town's Bandwagon Tour in 2018 and the release of her debut single "Somebody’s Daughter," inspired by a young woman who was homeless that she saw on the side of the road. Townes is currently on the road with Dierks Bentley's Burning Man Tour and is set to reunite with Lambert when she serves as an opening act on Lambert's all-female Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars Tour in early fall of 2019.
