Here’s Why Cody Johnson Won ACM Entertainer of the Year In 2026
Cody Johnson's ACM Entertainer of the Year win is a testament to the little things. His accomplishment is what happens when ego doesn't get in the way.
- Cody Johnson won his first-ever Entertainer of the Year award at the ACMs on Sunday (May 17).
- He'd previously been nominated for the award at the CMA Awards.
- Johnson will resume touring on May 29 in Grand Rapids, Mich.

This isn't to say Johnson is a picture of humility. "The Fall" singer is proud, confident in his abilities and very competitive, but he's never been cocky or expressed entitlement. That's worth stopping to appreciate given how he came up in this business.
Johnson was a legit Texas headliner with a deep catalog before dropping his first mainstream single, "On My Way To You" in 2018. It would have been easy for him to skip radio visits, half-ass his way through interviews and keep his distance from the rest of the Nashville community. Others in his position have!
It'd have also been easy for Warner to lean harder into artists they have more at stake with. The artist / record label agreement Johnson signed in 2018 is a partnership that's very artist-friendly. At the time, he was an indy artist and ...
"When it came to my publishing, my masters, creative control, the tour schedule we keep and how we run our operation, that wasn’t something I was willing to change," he told Billboard.
Other labels have leaned away from roster artists they don't have full control of. Typically you see this when a New York branch of a record label leads promotion.
I won't pretend to be privy to the inner workings of this insider conversation, but I will tell you what I've seen since Johnson became a Taste of Country RISER in 2019.
Few artists have been as dependable and professional. During awards show media junkets he often arrives (on time) flanked by men who look more like cattle ranchers on a business call than managers, publicists and label execs. His story spills out one fascinating detail at a time so every outlet leaves with an exclusive.
On stage he's not there to party. The show is high energy and focused and his band is far too tight to be anything but sober — if you've seen Carrie Underwood live then you know what I'm talking about — and the songs are really, really good.

A little known secret about Johnson is some of his best songs never crack the radio. In fact, I'd argue he's missed a few times with radio choices ("Nothin' On You" and "Dear Rodeo" over "Fenceposts" on his Ain't Nothin' To It album is an example) but that just means exploring his full catalogue results in surprise after surprise. Here are three you should go listen to right now:
- "That's Texas" from Leather
- "I Always Want To" from Human
- "I Know My Way Back" from Gotta Be Me
Unlike Lainey Wilson, Johnson's rise has been measured. He won a few Song/Single awards elsewhere and never cut a duet that felt less than authentic. This includes "Whiskey Bent" with Jelly Roll. These men are friends and Jelly has been telling us Cody deserves this award since 2024!
What Cody Johnson's Win Says About Country Music In 2026
Like Wilson, Johnson's win says song quality still matters in 2026 and traditional country artists still rule. No one is ever going to produce his or her way to the EOY podium, because that kind of froth gets blown away on stage.
During his acceptance speech, Johnson expressed gratitude for being able to spread positivity through music and that's just the message country (and this country) needs right now. Kindness is in. Anything that smells like selfishness or petulance isn't.
The full speech was a tribute to Luke Combs and all of it came minutes after he performed a cover of "Travelin' Soldier" that nobody asked for but everyone needed. The Chicks made this song famous 23 years ago, and, without as much as a hat tip to the trio, he reminded fans of everything good they did for country music.
Some have said we live in an era of social media influencers and viral stars with get-rich-quick values and ethos. I don't think that's true. Like clouds in the sky, this sort of lifestyle is passing.
Only the sun rises day after day, year after year. Like almost every artist who's ever won this award or the CMA equivalent, Cody Johnson has learned the importance of showing up for work. In country music that still matters.
