Elle King became a mother to her son, Lucky Levi, in September of 2021, and she says motherhood has completely changed her life. In a conversation with Taste of Country Nights' Evan Paul that covered King’s duet with Miranda Lambert, “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home)” and more, the singer got real about mom life. King described the experience as mostly positive, sharing that motherhood has added some much-needed structure to her life.

“I’m in a much better headspace,” she says. “There was too much freedom before. I need a little structure. I need it. It helps me. I’m not one that you can box in genre-wise, but I need a little structure for my day to run.”

Having a child has contributed more to King’s life than just giving her structure, however. The singer also shared that her new role has completely altered her perspective, and in turn, has made her a better person.

“Being a mom has changed me as a person,” she says. “It has made me a better everything. I want to be a better mother, better sister, better daughter, better friend, better performer, better songwriter, better boss, better everything.”

One challenge King has had to overcome after having a child was learning how to tour with an infant. She admits she’s still figuring it out, but she has received great advice from fellow artists who are moms.

“The mom community has been incredible,” says King. “Cary Ann from Shovels & Rope, she’s been the coolest. From Brandi Carlile to everybody, we kind of send funny things about everyone just winging it.”

King announced in March of 2021 that she and fiancé Dan Tooker were expecting. They welcomed their son on Sept. 1, 2021.
