Keith Urban Cries During Mass Same-Sex Wedding at 2014 Grammys
Keith Urban let his emotions show during a mass wedding performed by rapper Queen Latifah at the 2014 Grammys on Sunday night (Jan. 26).
The ceremony came late in the three-and-a-half hour CBS broadcast. While reaction on social media was decidedly mixed, the live audience gave a long ovation at the end of the performance and mass union.
The marriage of 34 couples actually included gay, straight, young and old couples. It took place during Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' performance of their hit 'Same Love.' Madonna also took the stage to sing during the night's signature moment.
Before the show, the song's producer, Lewis, said the moment "will be in our minds the ultimate statement of equality, that all the couples are entitled to the same exact thing" (quote via Rolling Stone).
"I expect that people with all kinds of opinions might voice them, and that’s healthy," National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences president Neil Portnow added.
News of the event didn't break until hours before the 2014 Grammy Awards. 'Same Love' has become an anthem for the LGBT community over the past year.
Within minutes of the performance, country singer Laura Bell Bundy and country trio SheDaisy both voiced their support on Twitter.
