Aww! Kelsea Ballerini Called Her Mama After Best Country Album Grammy Nod and It’s Adorable [Watch]
Kelsea Ballerini scored a 2019 Grammy nomination for Best Country Album for her sophomore album, Unapologetically, on Friday (Dec. 7), and she did what any young woman would do when she has good news to share — she called her mama.
The 25-year-old "Miss Me More" singer turned to social media to share a capture of the FaceTime video she made as she shared the news with her mother, Carla, accompanying it with a sweet tribute to a woman who had sacrificed a lot to help make her daughter's dreams come true.
"This woman unapologetically moved to Nashville 10 years ago for me to make music and give it a fair shot," she writes. "I got to call her this morning and tell her about my second Grammy nomination. There's no volume, but her face says everything about this journey and the weight this album has to the people that know me closest. Love you momma," she finishes, adding happy tears and heart emojis for emphasis.
Kelsea Ballerini and More Are Blazing Trails for Country Women:
Ballerini looks composed and very happy as her mom's face comes onto the screen and she starts to tell her the big news. Carla appears to say, "What?" a couple of times before the news really sinks in, and then she dissolves into joyous tears, raising her clasped hands triumphantly as if she is praying while her daughter also bursts into tears. The singer opened up further in another Instagram post, writing that she was "In tears over this" because after pouring herself into the album, she'd come to accept that it had more impact with her fans than with critics.
"It's been out for over a year, and it's never been nominated, but the bond it gave you and I was something I hadn't felt before," she explains, adding, "To me, that was the award and I had accepted that critically, it didn't land like it did between us. But, the pinnacle of music lovers and listeners just nominated Unapologetically for a damn GRAMMY. Beaming with pride on this. Never ever expected this. I love y'all. What a year. Thank you."
Ballerini scored her first Grammy nomination in 2016 for Best New Artist, and her mother accompanied her to the ceremony that year. The singer released Unapologetically in November of 2017 and has scored hits with "Legends" and "I Hate Love Songs." Her current single is "Miss Me More."
Unapologetically will face off against Brothers Osborne's Port Saint Joe, Girl Going Nowhere from Ashley McBryde, Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour and Chris Stapleton's From A Room: Vol. 2 when the 2019 Grammy Awards air live on CBS from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Feb. 10.
