Shane McAnally earned the designation of Songwriter of the Year ahead of the 2019 ACM Awards.

One of the songs McAnally was recognized for is Kacey Musgraves' "Space Cowboy" off her Grammy-winning album Golden Hour, which he co-wrote with the singer and Luke Laird. The song earned them a nomination for Song of the Year at the ACMs, as well as a win for Best Country Song at the 2019 Grammy Awards. McAnally and Musgraves have been longtime friends and co-writers, penning songs together for seven years. He describes the experience of writing songs with the burgeoning superstar as a "dream."

"We've had such an incredible run as friends as much as we have as collaborators. We just speak each others' language...and we really just see the world the same way," he explains to Billboard"I just think she's the greatest."

Originally, the ACMs Weren't for Everyone — Watch:

McAnally has long been one of Nashville's most revered songwriters, sending multiple songs to the top of the charts in 2018 and 2019 alone, including Thomas Rhett's "Marry Me" and "Unforgettable," "Get Along" by Kenny Chesney and Old Dominion's "Written in the Sand." He received the Songwriter of the Year award at the ACM Party for a Cause Stories, Songs & Stars event on Friday (April 5).

"It feels amazing, I'm really honored," he says about the accolade. "Just to get to write songs for a living is such a win, so to be acknowledged this way, it really is an honor to be nominated and it's even more fun to win," he adds, laughing.

Musgraves was one of the big winners of the night at the 2019 ACM Awards, taking home Female Artist of the Year and Album of the Year for Golden Hour.
