Is Taylor Swift’s ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ Her Best Shade Ever?
Taylor Swift's thirst for vengeance has never been as obvious as it is on her new single "Look What You Made Me Do" — or has it?
Swift's lead single from an upcoming studio album is thought to be a new chapter about feuds with Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian and/or Kanye West or maybe all three and them some. Time — and a few friends with loose lips — will tell. The singer is something of a savage genius when it comes to getting back on those who've scorned her, something her country music fans know well.
Ex-boyfriends were often the target of her best arrows back in the day. She took it easy on Taylor Lautner in "Back to December." No so with John Mayer. How many songs did he inspire? Some say two or three from Speak Now but we can be sure it was the esteemed guitarist who inspired the birth of "Dear John."
"Dear John, I see it all now — it was wrong / Don’t you think 19’s too young to be played by your dark, twisted games when I loved you so?" she sings in one of at least 10 songs about boyfriends that we can find. "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," "Forever and Always" (“Was I out of line? Did I say something way too honest that made you run and hide like a scared little boy?" she asks Joe Jonas, reportedly) and "Should've Said No" are a few from her country catalog.
Once she went pop, she really let it fly. "Bad Blood" is a dramatic retort to Perry (according to "they") that is so juicy one can't help but sit back, grab some popcorn and watch. "Innocent" was just as good. This song (rumored to be about West) is one she chose for the 2010 VMAs, one year after the rapper cut her off at the mic as she accepted an award.
Is more shade coming? Fans will have to wait until the November 10 release of Reputation to find out, but we know the answer is yes.
