In his long career in country music, Blake Shelton has surely come across some surly interviewers, but never has he faced a tougher crowd than Grumpy Cat. The superstar sat down with the internet-famous feline for an interview in preparation for the Kids’ Choice Awards, which Shelton is hosting, and Grumpy Cat — needless to say — was not impressed.

Shelton committed a faux pas right out of the gate when he addressed the furry curmudgeon, accidentally calling her a “Mr.”

“Oh … I’m sorry … Miss Grumpy Cat,” Shelton corrects uncomfortably.

The singer talks about how excited he is to be hosting the awards, throwing in a few puns for good measure, which of course, Grumpy Cat did not appreciate.

“No purr-suasion needed here! You see what I did there?” Shelton exclaims.

The singer also admitted he’d love to see Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson covered in green goo. “I mean I can picture it right meow,” he muses.

Shelton’s corny puns are met with sassy captions reflecting Grumpy Cat’s well-known persona before the cat just gives up listening.

“Are you sleeping?” Shelton asks incredulously. Watch the full, awkward exchange above.

The Kids’ Choice Awards are set to air March 12 on Nickelodeon. Shelton will be hosting for the second time this year, and he’s nominated for Favorite Male Vocalist. It’s not the first awards show for which Shelton has manned the mic, though, as he has also hosted the ACM Awards. He’s handed off that event to Dierks Bentley this year.

Shelton is gearing up for the 10th season of The Voice, where girlfriend Gwen Stefani will be appearing as an advisor for his team. He’s also got some new music in the pipeline, which he says will be some of his most personal yet, speaking directly to the events in his personal life over the past year.
