Brett Young did what he had to do to get himself in a room with a couple of Nashville's top songwriters, and the result was "In Case You Didn't Know."

One of the top songs of 2017 started with an offer Trent Tomlinson, Tyler Reeve and Kyle Schlienger couldn't refuse: a free trip to Mexico. During a media session prior to his No. 1 party to celebrate the song's success, Young talked about where he was professionally at that time. There were a lot of positive things happening, and he was talking to several record labels, but he couldn't get into a room with any top writers. So he and a private investor brainstormed.

"One of our ideas was, 'I doubt they would turn down a free trip to Mexico,'" Young recalls.

They were right. An eight-day trip to Puerto Vallarta was split in half, with a different group of writers coming for four days each. "In Case You Didn't Know" was written on the very last day. The singer and Taste of Country RISERS act remembers being tired and wanting only to call it a trip, but Tomlinson started scrolling through song ideas on his phone and telling stories.

"Basically his mom would stop him every time he’d leave the house and say, 'Hey Trent, in case you didn’t know, I love you,'" Young says. At that point the men got back to work, digging deep for what would become his second No. 1 hit, and one of the biggest songs of 2017.

"I think once we identified that the song wasn’t about Trent’s mom and it was actually going to be a twist on how poor of a job men do at expressing their feelings," Young says, "I think the song was written and tracked in two-and-a-half hours."

Did they know it would become a hit? A video shown prior to the start of Monday's celebration shows the four men were more than enthusiastic. You never "know," but each truly believed that with a little good fortune, they might have a wedding song that could last a generation.

They were right.
