Carrie Underwood on Strong Marriage: ‘It’s About Putting Your Family First’

Each day, Carrie Underwood has to balance being a superstar and a mom and a wife. Having a husband who is equally as busy traveling as a hockey player, it’s easy to understand how a strong marriage could be tough to maintain. But Underwood and Mike Fisher's relationship is as healthy as ever, and the singer says the secret is being a team and keeping priorities straight.

“It’s all about being supportive of one another,” Underwood tells Yahoo. “He’s my best friend and we love our family, that’s what it’s all about. We sacrifice for each other and compromise for each other and do our best to spend as much time as we possibly have with each other. It’s about putting your family and relationship first.”

Underwood and Fisher married in 2010 and have one child, 1-year-old Isaiah. It's been a fun experience, the singer admits.

“Every day is something new,” she says of raising her son. “He says more and more words, recognizes new things. He loves to sing, he loves to climb. He’s everywhere, and it’s wonderful!”

The family is big on making memories, so Halloween will be a priority. Last year, Underwood shared that they would dress Isaiah as a fish (a nod to the family surname), but now that he’s older, she’s planning on taking him trick-or-treating for real.

"I've blocked off some time to be able to take him trick-or-treating a little bit and got him a costume and everything," she shared with E! at the 2016 CMT Artists of the Year event.

Fisher accompanied Underwood to the show — just one more way the spouses support one another. Underwood also often celebrates Fisher’s accomplishments as an NHL player for the Nashville Predators, like becoming a team captain or playing his 1000th game.

Soon, Underwood will take the stage again alongside Brad Paisley to host the CMA Awards for the ninth year in a row, this year celebrating the ceremony’s 50th anniversary.
