Chrissy Metz Was ‘Afraid Out of My Mind’ to Sing With Carrie Underwood Live
This Is Us star Chrissy Metz made her first live singing debut on Sunday night (April 7) at the 2019 ACM Awards, and she did it next to one of country music's biggest voices: Carrie Underwood.
Underwood is featured on the soundtrack for Metz's upcoming film Breakthrough, so pairing them to sing "I'm Standing With You" — also with Lauren Alaina, Mickey Guyton and Maddie & Tae — was seamless, but still terrifying for the actress.
Metz is a talented vocalist and sings often on This Is Us, but Sunday's live performance on CBS was new territory. Thankfully, it went well and the group of women received a standing ovation from a mostly country music crowd.

"It was pretty incredible," Metz admits on Monday's (April 8) Live With Kelly & Ryan.
"You know, Diane Warren wrote the song for the title track Breakthrough, and this sort of just came out in the conversation, but I didn't think it was going to happen," she recalls of how the ACM Awards performance came to be, "So when it was presented I'm like 'Uh, yeah, okay! I'm afraid out of my mind but yes, I'd love to do it.'"
Metz was able to push through any stage fright she had going into it and held her own next to Underwood.
"I definitely push through, I try to push through the fear ... it's sort of what we make in our mind," she continues. "But I was like, you know, I'm just gonna go and be present and authentic. If I'm gonna be prepared and we had rehearsals and I just did it."
"I mean doing live television is very different," Metz furthers as Ripa interjects that being live is "terrifying and live."
Breakthrough is the true story of how a mother's love wins in the face of impossible odds. In addition to Metz, the film stars Josh Lucas, Topher Grace, Mike Colter Marcel Ruiz, Sam Trammell and Dennis Haysbert. It hits theaters on April 17.
