Kevin Costner on ‘Yellowstone’ Return: ‘I’d Love to Do It’
Season 5 of Yellowstone will resume in November. Could Kevin Costner be back to play John Dutton?
On Tuesday (April 9), the actor addressed the elephant in the room in the most direct way yet. He was at CinemaCon, a convention of the National Association of Theater Owners in Las Vegas.
- Season 5 of Yellowstone started in fall 2022 and went on hiatus the following January. Part 2 was expected for last summer, but double film and TV strikes made that impossible.
- In the meantime, it became clear that Costner and decision makers had reached an impasse with regards to his contact for the rest of Season 5 and beyond.
- Late last year, it was announced that the second half of Season 5 would be the final season.
Talking to ET, Costner shared he would still love to return. Filming is scheduled to start soon however, so that window is closing.
"I'd like to be able to do it, but we haven't been able to," he begins. "I've loved making that series. I've made five seasons of it and thought I was going to make seven, but right now we're at five."

The Hollywood Reporter shares that scripts have been written for the rest of Season 5 and Costner is not a part of them. Still, the 69-year-old actor said he'd "love to do it."
His absence certainly changes how John Dutton's character arc ends. Right now it seems possible that the family patriarch may not appear on screen again (Puck News shares that Sheridan is happy with the scripts he's got), although some scenes for Part 2 may have been filmed during filming for Part 1.
Rumors of tension between Costner and Taylor Sheridan made headlines in 2023, but talking ET, Costner indicated he wasn't as bullheaded as he was being portrayed.
"Well, you know, (Dutton) needs to be proactive in what happens and I've kind of had my own fantasy how it might be," Costner says, "but that's Taylor's thing. I said as much to him a while back. I had thoughts how it could happen, but we just have to see."
Costner was at CinemaCon to promote his new epic movie series Horizon. Chapter 1 premiers in theaters on June 28, with Chapter 2 coming Aug. 16. He's been writing the movie for decades and invested a significant amount of his own money and land to shoot it.
Chapter 3 and 4 of Horizon will begin filming soon.
