Miranda Lambert became an instant stepmom when she married her husband, New York City police officer Brendan McLoughlin, in January. In a new interview, she opens up about life with her new husband — and how she feels about being a stepmother.

The couple have been splitting their time between Lambert's rural estate in Tennessee and an apartment in New York City so they can balance the demands of their very different careers, and Lambert tells Extra they "have the best of both worlds. We spend time in New York, we get to see our adorable nugget, then we get to come back to the farm and have the quiet life. I’m enjoying the balance.”

The "nugget" in question is McLoughlin's 7-month-old son from a previous relationship.

“My stepson is amazing,” Lambert gushes. “I’m loving that whole phase, and I’ve raised a million dogs, so I feel like I’ve got that part of my womanly/motherly thing is full, so this is a whole new journey. It’s great.”

McLoughlin also inherited Lambert's 13 dogs as part of their union.

" ...Bless his heart, he didn’t have any dogs or any animals at all when he came into this relationship, so he inherited a whole barn full," Lambert observes, adding, “I was like ‘Hey, I got the dogs, you got the kid, we can mix and mingle.’”

Lambert made her comments at her annual Muttnation March during the 2019 CMA Music Festival in Nashville on Thursday (June 6). She and her mother, Bev Lambert, founded the MuttNation Foundation rescue organization ten years ago in a very grassroots manner, and have since rescued thousands of dogs and raised $4 million for awareness of adoption, spaying and neutering and support for shelter dogs.

Lambert is also scheduled to perform during the 2019 CMA Fest, where she'll be joined by her Pistol Annies bandmates, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley.
