Miranda Lambert Performing ‘Tin Man’ Solo at 2017 ACM Awards
Miranda Lambert will hit the stage at the 2017 ACM Awards to perform "Tin Man" in an acoustic version, and the superstar gave a rare interview to Taste of Country in Las Vegas in advance of the awards show to talk about the song.
"Tin Man" is an especially emotional song from her current double album, The Weight of These Wings, which is nominated for Album of the Year in the ACMs. Its format would make it an unusual choice for a single at country radio, but Lambert tells Taste of Country she's "never been one of those artists that's driven by singles."
"I don't know if it's a single or not," she says of "Tin Man," adding, "I don't care, really. I have 24 songs that I wanna showcase at some point, not as singles or whatever. I just felt like this opportunity is time for me to show that I'm a true singer-songwriter. I'm kind of all over the map as far as the emotional journey on this record, and it's just another piece."
Lambert wrote the song with Jack Ingram and Jon Randall, and it's easy to imagine she is thinking of her divorce from Blake Shelton as she addresses the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz in the lyrics, singing, "Every time you’re feeling empty / Better thank your lucky stars / If you ever felt one breaking / You’d never want a heart."
The country superstar explores all of the emotional fallout from her high-profile divorce on The Weight of These Wings, and she admits it wasn't easy.
"Some of it was not fun," she says with a laugh. "But you've got to let life lead the art, and that's what I did. It's kind of just my diary of the last couple of years, really."
According to the Tennessean, Lambert changed her performance at the last minute, opting to play "Tin Man" in a solo acoustic version at the 2017 ACM Awards, which are set to air live from Las Vegas on Sunday night (April 2) on CBS at 8PM ET.
