Former Blake Shelton Opener Austin Allsup Joins His ‘The Voice’ Team
Blake Shelton is going to have a bit of a reunion this season on The Voice with one of his new teammates, Austin Allsup. The gritty folk-rocker has experience as an opening act for Shelton, and on Tuesday (Sept. 27), he performed "Wild Horses" for the star and his three fellow coaches.
The country-rock hopeful showed off his unique vocals and powerful range in his performance of the song by the Rolling Stones, earning a chair-spin from Shelton about halfway through. Afterward, the two connected, and Allsup recalled that Shelton once kissed him after a performance.
The adorable reunion brings Allsup to Team Blake, hopefully to stardom similar to other alumni like RaeLynn, Cassadee Pope, and the Swon Brothers.
Shelton is on his 11th season as a coach on The Voice, but this is the first year he’s had some competition for the country artists. Miley Cyrus is holding on to her country roots to make a play for those artists with some twang, and she doesn’t plan to give up any to Shelton.
“I want him to know, he’s got another country gal on the scene, and I’m like ready to steal his good country,” she declares. "“He has no idea what’s comin’ for you! Whoo, child. I cannot wait!”
So far Cyrus has won over pop-country singer Khaliya Kimberlie, who rocked a cover of Kelsea Ballerini’s “Dibs." We'll see if Shelton has the ability to snag a few more of his own.
