Jessica Mitchell Is Caught in a Love Triangle in ‘Maybe It’s Me’ Video [Exclusive Premiere]
Jessica Mitchell finds herself in the middle of a game of tug-of-war — an actual love triangle in her relationship — in her latest single, "Maybe It's Me." The four-minute piano ballad showcases the Canadian singer-songwriter's vocal power, and it's no wonder she's been compared to Adele.
Taste of Country is premiering the music video for "Maybe It's Me" on Tuesday (Sept. 11). The clip shows a couple in the middle of a metaphorical (and quite literal) game of push and pull, but it's evident the relationship is on it's way out.
Shot in a picturesque field, Mitchell sings of a woman who comes to realize that her ex isn't entirely to blame this time around.
"Maybe it's the way she calls you baby / Maybe it's the way I don't / Maybe it's the way she hangs on your every word the way I won't / I can feel it in the way you hold me lately / I'll never be what you need / And it's easy to blame this all on you / But maybe it's me," she sings in the chorus.
With sweeping musical accompaniment coupled by Mitchell's soft whisper and striking belt on various verses, "Maybe It's Me" — written by Mitchell with Jeff Dalziel — leaves a mark.
"The bones of 'Maybe It's Me' are about taking a long look in the mirror, and learning a lesson that placing all the blame on the people you love sometimes isn’t always fair," Mitchell explains. "It’s about accepting yourself in relationships for who you are, especially if it’s a mess. I personally haven’t always made the right choices about who I’ve loved, but the important thing is you always learn from it and make sure you can move forward knowing you won’t make that mistake again."
"Maybe It's Me" is featured on her debut album, Heart of Glass, released earlier this year. She worked with producers Blake Bollinger, Ben Stennis and Karen Kosowski in Toronto and Nashville to craft the 11-track project. About to embark on her first headlining tour this fall, Mitchell has spent time on the road honing her sound with acts like Terri Clark, Kiefer Sutherland, Johnny Reid, and Bonnie Raitt. Previously, she was asked to perform at the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame to honor Neil Young and was recently nominated for Roots Artist of the Year at the 2018 CCMA Awards.
