Fresh off the release of her sophomore album, Pageant Material, Kacey Musgraves debuted the record's title track for the first time on television on The View.

“Pageant Material” is everything we’ve come to know and love about Musgraves — honest, catchy, quirky and with a little bit of sass for good measure. When asked about the folky tune, Musgraves said it’s a humorous but true reflection of herself.

“It’s just kind of a satirical song poking fun at myself for not being pageant-perfect all the time,” Musgraves explained, though most women would probably say it could easily apply to themselves as well. The song is another testament to Musgraves’ ability to tell the truth in a way that resonates with so many.

“Pageant Material” is co-written by veteran songwriters Luke Laird and Shane McAnally, but Musgraves says her tunes are always rooted in observations about her personal life and the lives of those around her.

“[I'm inspired by] real life,” Musgraves noted. “Things I’m going through. Things friends and family are going through. One thing that I really love about country music is that it’s always been just about real life.”

In her traditional rhinestone-and-sequined pink country getup, complete with a backing band clad in blue suits and bolo ties, Musgraves sang and played acoustic guitar, nailing the performance from the first note to the last.

After her debut album Same Trailer, Different Park, attracted much critical acclaim, her second album was highly anticipated by fans and critics alike, but the artist didn’t let the pressure get to her.

“I didn’t really have any intentions going in, except for just wanting to write good songs, country songs,” she told Taste of Country during Country Jam. “All my songs are inspired by what’s going on in my world and in my life.”

Musgraves announced her 2015 Country & Western Rhinestone Revue tour in support of the new record on June 23, which will begin in Atlanta, Ga. on Aug. 27 and run through Nov. 22, when she ends in Amsterdam.
