‘Golden Hour’ May Be Kacey Musgraves’ Best Album Yet, Based on These New Songs [Listen]
Kacey Musgraves dropped some new tunes off her upcoming album Golden Hour on the crowd in Austin, Texas, which was the second night of Little Big Town's Breakers Tour.
As promised, her new songs are insightful and very Kacey Musgraves. "Space Cowboy" is a standout, because it comes from the heart — presumably the song is about the breakup she faced before meeting her husband — and it's pretty melancholy.
"You can have your space, cowboy / I ain't gonna fence you in / Go on ride away in your Silverado / I'll see you around again / Cause I know my place /And it ain't with you / Sunsets fade / And love does, too," she sings. It's a somber turn from "Follow Your Arrow" and "Biscuits," and the pure emotion makes it one of the more intriguing tracks she's shared off Golden Hour thus far.
Her LBT tour set is pretty evenly weighted with new and old music, including another new one called "Velvet Elvis." The happy-go-lucky love song was likely inspired by her relationship with husband Ruston Kelly. It's uptempo and compares the joys of love to the sweet touch of velvet and the comfort of being with someone you adore.
"Knew as soon as I felt it / You're my velvet Elvis baby," Musgraves sings in the chorus.
She also shared one called "Wonder Woman," about not needing someone to meet high expectations to fall hard in love.
"Baby I ain't Wonder Woman / I don't know how to wrestle the truth out of you / Don't you know I'm only human / And if I let you down / I don't mean to / All I need is a place to land / I don't need a Superman / To win my lovin,'" she sings over a perky melody.
Musgraves explains that Golden Hour pulls from all facets of her life, including her marriage. It's overall a positive album, she tells Entertainment Weekly: "That was important for me to include on this record."
"It’s such an ugly time right now with society and politics, and it could be easy to focus on that," she adds, "But one thing we could use is a little more love and positivity and pretty colors."
Golden Hour is expected to be released in early 2018.
